A buyer paid 387,000 to obtain a diamond and sapphire ring gifted to the actress by her good friend the late Michael Jackson. The celebrated Taj Mahal diamond, an additional gift from Burton to Dame Elizabeth for her 40th birthday celebration, was sold for 5.7m, an all-time record for an Indian jewel.
A a pretty tiara given to her by her 3rd spouse Mike Todd in 1957 fetched 2.7 million – about six times its estimate. The record-breaking sale follows a trend in 2011 of auction jewellery getting higher prices compared to the estimates.
